After more than two decades (gulp!) working for other companies, I recently took the leap to start my own marketing consultancy. This is something that I had been thinking about for the better part of a couple of years - but the timing never seemed ideal (like deciding to have kids). However, after a couple of fortuitous non-related events that occurred, I decided that was now or never. I therefore packed up my box and left the comfort of my stable, high-salary role to jump in with both feet, not knowing where or when I would land. And I'm so glad I did it.
There were three primary drivers that had me yearning to work for myself: 1). Variety. As a consultant, I get to work with different clients on a variety of projects that span different industries. I love the challenge of learning something new or bringing an outside perspective to the company. 2). Phenomenal Clients. I get to choose the companies and clients to work with. I've been truly blessed to have had opportunities to work with some absolutely amazing people over the years. I've kept in touch with most of the colleagues with whom I've worked; spending 10+ hour days with people in good times and bad creates strong bonds. When I announced that I was starting my own consulting firm, I was able to reach out to my network and secure some solid growth-minded clients. 3). Flexibility. Working for myself gives me the freedom to work around the needs of my family (early mornings, evenings, and weekends if need be). Admittedly, I'm a workaholic because I love what I do, but in a corporate environment, I was tied to my desk during work hours. Working for myself gives me the flexibility to work when I can best focus and be the most productive, even if it means burning the candle at both ends.
I'm not saying this is for everyone, but for me it's the right decision and I'm excited for this next chapter.
